The R31 was a comprehensive redesign, with 92% new components compared to its predecessor, the R30. The R31 showed promise early in the season, with notable performances at AUS and CHN. However, the season was marred by inconsistent results, with several retirements and missed opportunities preventing the team from capitalizing on its early momentum.
HU05 was one of the R31s used during the 2011 season. Vitaly Petrov, driving this chassis, achieved the team’s first podium of the season in Australia. The R31 concluded the season with a total of 37 points, securing 5th place in the Constructors Championship. The R31 would stand as the starting point for a new generation of cars developed by Lotus. After the seasons conclusion, the HU05 would be tested by Kimi Räikkönen and used for furthering the development of the very successful E20.
