The De Tomaso Pantera L, introduced in 1972, is an Italian mid-engine sports car combining Ghia styling with American V8 engineering. Designed by Tom Tjaarda, it features a steel monocoque chassis and a longitudinally mounted Ford 351 Cleveland V8 producing approximately 295–325 horsepower in its original US-market specification.
Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a five-speed ZF transaxle, integrating the gearbox and differential into a single assembly. The chassis features independent double-wishbone suspension at all four corners, coil springs, telescopic dampers, and four-wheel disc brakes.
With a wheelbase of 2,499 mm and an overall length of approximately 4,270 mm, the Pantera L combines compact dimensions with a rear-biased weight distribution of approximately 40:60.
The L, or Lusso, version introduced improved equipment, revised styling, and US safety modifications while retaining the original Pantera’s fundamental chassis architecture and naturally aspirated V8 powertrain.
